Hawkeyes Earn Academic Honors

March 26, 2009

IOWA CITY, IA — The University of Iowa men and women’s swimming and diving teams have recently earned several national and conference academic awards. The Hawkeye women’s team was recently named to the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division I Academic All-America team for fall 2008, and 25 Hawkeyes earned academic all-Big Ten honors for the 2008-09 season.

“We are happy to see our teams rewarded with academic all-America and all-conference honors,” said Hawkeye Head Coach Marc Long. “It exemplifies their hard work and the priorities they have with regards to swimming and academics.”

The CSCAA list of honorees consisted of 93 women and 41 men’s teams from across the country. All honored teams surpassed the required 3.0 GPA. The Hawkeye women posted an overall team GPA of 3.19.

Fourteen women’s swimmers and divers earned academic all-Big Ten recognition, while 11 members of the men’s squad achieved the honor. The number for the women’s team ranks second-best in school history, while the number of men’s honorees ranks fourth. To be eligible for academic all-Big Ten, student-athletes must be letterwinners and be in at least their second academic year at the institution. They must also carry a career grade point average of 3.0 or better.
