MACOMB, IL — The University of Iowa track and field team opened its weekend of competition Friday by winning two events at the 20th annual Lee Calhoun Memorial at Western Illinois University’s Hanson Field in Macomb, IL.
The Hawkeye trio of senior Tommy Tate, sophomore James Paul and junior Jay Renaud swept the top three places in the men’s 3,000 meters. Tate won the race in 8:38.27, Paul finished second in 8:45.10 and Renaud came in third in 8:50.59. Hawkeye senior Mark Schaapveld was Iowa’s other event winner, taking first place in the men’s hammer throw with a season-best 179-9. Junior Zachary Schimp placed fifth in that event with a collegiate-best 152-9. Senior Mandy Chandler placed second in women’s hammer throw with a toss of 146-7.
Iowa will continue competition at three different meets throughout the weekend. Some student-athletes will compete at Saturday’s Lee Calhoun Memorial events. Others are competing late Friday night at the Mesa Classic at Mesa Community College’s Riggs Stadium in Mesa, AZ. The rest will compete at Saturday’s Sun Angel Classic at Arizona State University’s Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe, AZ.
