NEW ORLEANS, LA — With only the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships remaining, the University of Iowa women’s cross country and track and field team is currently ranked 13th in the national Terry Crawford Program of the Year standings.
The award, which is given annually by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field seasons) based on the institution’s finish at the NCAA Division I Championships. In order to be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for the NCAA Championships. Scoring is based on the team’s finish at each NCAA Division I Championship in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, 31st = 31 points) with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award recipient.
“Our goal as a program is to compete for the highest honors possible at the national level across the cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field seasons, and this ranking reflects that commitment,” explained Head Women’s Track and Cross Country Coach Layne Anderson. “We have one more opportunity with the upcoming outdoor championships to improve our ranking in the Terry Crawford Program of the Year standings before setting our sites on the 2009-10 seasons. A top priority for our program moving forward athletically is to field a comprehensive program that is competitive across seasons and across event groups.”
Iowa is in 13th place with 51.5 points after placing 24th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships and tying for 27th at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Florida State holds a narrow lead with 11 points, while Oregon is close behind in second place with 11.5.
The Terry Crawford Program of the Year Award is named after USTFCCCA Hall of Famer and current Cal Poly head coach Terry Crawford. Crawford has won five NCAA Championships, and over 20 conference Championships. Her 1986 Texas squad remains the only NCAA women’s program to ever win the Triple Crown (cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field titles).
