IOWA CITY — Former Midland Luther College Head Coach John Owens has joined the University of Iowa women’s golf coaching staff, the announcement coming Wednesday from Head Coach Kelly Crawford.

Owens replaces former Iowa Assistant Adam Kaufman, who left the program to take over as the Golf Pro at Finkbine Golf Course.

“I am really excited to have John on our staff,” said Crawford. “He is highly motivated and I know he will do a great job for our program. As we continue to rise in the Big Ten ranks, John’s passion and enthusiasm will be a tremendous springboard for our future success.”

Owens has four years of coaching experience on the Division-III and Division-II levels. This past spring, Owens served as the Midland Lutheran College interim head coach for both men’s and women’s golf. He was Troy University men’s and women’s graduate assistant coach from 2007-08 while he got his masters. Prior to that, Owens was the Midland Lutheran College head men’s coach from 2005-2007 and was named NAIA Region III Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2007 and the Great Plains Athletic Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 2007. He coached and graduated five academic all-Americans and had his team maintain a 3.36 GPA.

He was also a four-year letterwinner (2001-05) at Midland Lutheran College. Owens was team captain twice and received all-conference accolades three times in his career.
