Fans Can Text Game-Day Problems to UI Staff

Sept. 3, 2009

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Fans of the Hawkeyes and the visiting team attending football games at historic Kinnick Stadium this fall have a new way of communicating to UI Athletic Department concerns from their location in the grandstands.

Fans will now be able to send a text message requesting assistance. That message will be delivered directly to UI staff inside the Paul W. Brechler Press Box who will dispatch appropriate security or support staff to address the problem.

Fans can text their message to “97178” then type the word “ALERT” followed by a description of the concern and the location inside Kinnick Stadium.

The UI has enlisted the expertise of FanDriveMedia of Atlanta. FanDriveMedia’s list of clients includes the International Olympic Committee, several franchises in the National Football League and Major League Baseball and a growing number of universities and college athletics programs.

“FanDriveMedia provides interactive mobile technology to sports teams across the globe and our FanAssist application enhances the game day experience for all fans in attendance,” said Jonathan Vick, co-founder of FanDriveMedia.

“This is another great way for our guests to inform us of problems and issues we may not learn about otherwise,” said Paula Jantz, the UI’s associate athletics director in the charge of event management.

“Sometimes fans are hesitant to report the behavior of those sitting around them, but we hope this new technology will allow them to feel comfortable informing us of those types of problems. Our objective is to work with our fans to maintain the family-friendly atmosphere that have made attending Iowa football game so special.”

The text messaging system will be operational Saturday when Iowa entertain Northern Iowa in its 2009 season opener. The UI Athletics Department will also continue to accept telephone calls from fans. That number is (319) 384-3000.
