Former Hawkeye Track and Football Star Earns Recognition

Playing in a Rose Bowl and becoming one of the best discus throwers in Big Ten Conference history weren’t exactly long-term goals for Gary Kostrubala when he entered Marist High School in August of 1978.

As a matter of fact, they weren’t even in the realm of possibility in his mind.

And for good reason.

First off, Kostrubala never played grammar school football and had no intention of playing for Marist. Second, he had never thrown the discus before and didn’t intend to go out for Marist’s track team, either.

But if anyone knows about life’s unexpected turns, it’s Kostrubala.
