Jan. 29, 2010

IOWA CITY, Iowa – More than half of the student-athletes currently participating in the intercollegiate athletics program at the University of Iowa earned a grade point of 3.0 or better for the 2009 fall semester, the UI Athletics Department announced today.

310 of the 618 student-athletes involved in the UI’s 24 varsity sports programs earned a 3.0 GPA or better in the fall. That total includes 27 student-athletes who scored a perfect 4.0 GPA and another 97 student-athletes who earned a GPA of 3.5 or better.

In addition, eight UI student-athletes earned a position on the President’s List and another 108 were named to the Dean’s List. Students must have two consecutive semesters of a 4.0 GPA for at least 12 graded hours to be named to the President’s List; student must maintain a GPA of 3.5 or more for at least 12 graded hours to be named to the Dean’s List.

“Much is written – and rightly so – about our student-athletes’ accomplishments on the court, field, or mat. I’m so proud of how our young men and women competed in the classroom. Congrats to them all,” said Gary Barta, the UI’s director of athletics.

The performance of the UI’s student-athletes in the classroom last fall is the latest in a string of academic successes for the UI Athletics Department:

“Our student-athletes are committed to being the best in and out of competition. Their academic performance demonstrates the true meaning of the term student-athletes.”
Fred Mims, UI Associate Athletics Director for Student Services and Compliance

  • In December, the Iowa football compared very favorably to its peers participating Bowl Championship Series bowl games, ranking second among the 10 with a Graduation Success Rate of 74. Only Cincinnati ranked better with a rate of 75.
  • In November, the NCAA reported that the graduation rate for student-athletes who enrolled at the UI in the fall of the 2002-03 academic year was 70 percent, six percentage points better than the national average and two points better than a year ago.
  • In May, each 24 of the UI’s varsity sports programs posted an Academic Progress Rate (APR) well beyond the 925 national benchmark and two – men’s cross country and women’s golf – scored a perfect score of 1,000.

“Our student-athletes are committed to being the best in and out of competition. Their academic performance demonstrates the true meaning of the term student-athletes,” said Fred Mims, the UI’s associate athletics director for student services and compliance.
