Hawkeye Alum Preps for 2012 Olympics

June 7, 2010

IOWA CITY, IA – University of Iowa alum Racheal Marchand recently wrapped a busy month of the May competing south of the border. The 2009 Hawkeye graduate won the Puerto Rican National Title last month, completing the 5k race in 16:14. She also set the Puerto Rican 10k road record in 34:30.

Marchand recently resigned her position as a pharmaceutical representative to train with Iowa Head Coach Layne Anderson in Iowa City. She aspires for the opportunity to compete for Puerto Rico in the 2012 Olympics in London. Marchand can compete for Puerto Rico because her father, Dr. Hector Marchand, is from there.

“Racheal made the decision to step away from an outstanding professional opportunity in pharmaceutical sales to pursue her dream of competing in the 2012 Olympics,” said Anderson. “Her recent performances demonstrate that she has returned quickly to a high level of racing and is poised to advance her running career in the future.”

Marchand was a four-time all-American competing for the Hawkeyes. She was named the 2008 NCAA Midwest Regional Cross Country Champion and Athlete of the Year and was Iowa’s 2009 nominee for Big Ten Female Athlete of the Year.
