Aug. 10, 2010

COLLEGE STATION, TX – University of Iowa divers Deidre Freeman and Veronica Rydze advanced one stage closer to an AT&T National Diving Championship today. The Hawkeye duo placed sixth in the women’s 3-Meter Synchronized Diving semifinal round to slide into the six-team finals. The Hawkeye pair will compete in the finals Saturday at Noon at the Student Recreation Center Natatorium on the campus of Texas A&M University.

By advancing to the championship finals, Freeman and Rydze have increased their chances of being invited to participate in the World Championships in July 2011, which is one step closer to earning an opportunity to compete in the Olympic Trials for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The duo advanced to the diving semifinals after placing second in the preliminary competition July 14 in Minneapolis.

“This is a big step for both women,” said Head Diving Coach Bob Rydze. “It shows they’re one of the six best synchronized diving teams in the country. I’m extremely proud of their effort and we’re looking forward to Saturday’s championship finals.”
