Schedule Loaded With Nationally Ranked Competition

Aug. 17, 2010

IOWA CITY, IA – The American Volleyball Coaches Association released its preseason top 25 poll this afternoon and the University of Iowa volleyball program found four top 10 teams on its schedule, including top-ranked Penn State.

The Hawkeyes have set school attendance records in each of Head Coach Sharon Dingman’s first two seasons in Iowa City and the upcoming schedule lends itself to another potential record-breaking year. Iowa opens the season at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Aug. 27-29, hosting Alabama, Southern Illinois and UW-Green Bay in the Hawkeye Challenge.

The Hawkeyes then hit the road for a preseason tournament in St. Louis, MO, where Iowa will be pitted against Wake Forest, Creighton and tournament host Saint Louis, who is receiving votes in the AVCA preseason poll.

Iowa returns to Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Sept. 10, to kick off the annual Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk series against No. 9 Iowa State. The Hawkeyes host the Cyclones at 7 p.m. one night before the Iowa-Iowa State football game (Sept. 11) inside Kinnick Stadium.

The Hawkeyes then travel to Drake and Northern Illinois for their final preseason competition before serving up the Big Ten season at No. 12 Michigan (Sept. 24). The conference schedule features a home-away series versus the top-ranked Nittany Lions, Minnesota and Illinois, who are tied for sixth in the preseason poll, and 12th-ranked Michigan.

Iowa will also play two games apiece against Michigan State, Ohio State and Wisconsin – all schools receiving votes in the AVCA preseason poll.

Three Hawkeye matches will be showcased on national television. Both of Iowa’s contests versus No. 6 Minnesota (10/6, 10/27) and the home matchup with Northwestern (10/30) will be televised live on the Big Ten Network (HD).
