IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa volleyball team dropped a straight-set decision to Iowa State tonight to kick off the 2010 Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series. The Cyclones topped Iowa, 25-14, 25-12, 25-14, in front of a near-record crowd of 2,787 to claim the first two points of the annual rivalry series. The attendance number was the second largest in program history.
“We simply didn’t pass the ball well and when you don’t do that you don’t give yourself much of a chance,” said Head Coach Sharon Dingman. “Iowa State played well and we did not. They’re a good program and we may have come out a little intimidated. I certainly don’t expect to see a repeat effort from our team. You can’t win and play like that in the Big Ten.”
The Cyclones (6-1) took the first set, 25-14. Both teams were aggressive in the onset. The scoring was back and forth through the 10th point with six lead changes before Iowa State went on a five-point run to go up on the Hawkeyes, 15-10. Iowa battled within three points, 16-13, but Iowa State closed strong to grab a one-set match advantage. Senior Becky Walters and junior Megan Eskew recorded three kills each.
Iowa State never slowed after the first set, firing off four straight points before being stopped by consecutive kills from freshman Rachael Bedell and Walters. Bedell recorded two kills in the set, but it was not enough to lead Iowa past the Cyclones and Iowa State held on for a decisive, 25-12, set 2 win.

The Hawkeyes (5-2) fired away in the third set and grabbed an early 2-0 lead, but Iowa Sate countered with a 4-1 run and grabbed the lead for good. The teams battled it out through the first 13 points before ISU pulled away to capture the match victory with a 25-14 set three win. Sophomore Mallory Husz led the Hawkeyes in the third set with four kills. Nikki Dailey recorded seven assists in the final set.
The young Iowa team produced 25 kills, including eight from Husz, seven from Bedell and five from Walters. Eskew smashed three kills and Tiffany Nilges recorded a pair of attack points. Freshman Dailey recorded a career-high 19 assists.
Iowa returns to action September 14 when they travel to Des Moines to face undefeated Drake.
