IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s golf team has inked one of the top players in Arizona to a National Letter of Intent. High school senior Shelby Phillips of Gilbert, Ariz., has committed to join the Hawkeyes in the fall of 2011.
Phillips is considered the No. 2 ranked player in her respective state (Arizona) and the 56th best prospect in the 2011 class. She is also ranked 116th in the Golfweek Rankings. In 2010, Phillips won five of the nine high school tournaments she entered while competing for Highland High School. She finished seventh at the 5A-1 State Championship. It was her fourth straight year placing at the 5A-1 State Championship. She also posted a fifth place finish at the AJGA Junior at Quad Cities, carding a 228 (78-74-76). Phillips was tabbed the 2007 and 2009 PGA Junior Series Player of the Year. She was the runner-up for the same honor in 2008 and 2010.
