Carver Revitalization Moving Ahead Nicely

Feb. 18, 2011

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The college basketball and wrestling seasons at the University of Iowa are winding down….Tom Brands’ nationally ranked UI wrestling team has completed another unbeaten dual meet season and is now squarely focused on the madness of the month ahead.

Lisa Bluder’s Iowa women’s basketball team will stage Senior Day next Thursday when the nationally ranked Hawkeyes entertain Illinois on Thursday. Fran McCaffery’s first season as head coach of the UI’s men’s team includes just two more home dates – tomorrow against Michigan and next weekend against Purdue and then, like Bluder’s Bunch, it’s off to Indianapolis for the 2011 Big Ten Tournament.

“It’s progressing nicely. There’s plenty of work to be done, but it is really taking shape. Spaces like the offices for our basketball staffs and the head coaches are, of course, much further along than, for example, the renovation of the old third floor office space, but we’re excited about the progress.”

However, having said all that, there’s plenty of work being done inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena as the $47 million revitalization his the homestretch. Crews are installing ceiling tile and cabinetry in the new office space that is a part of that project, preparing the space that will be home to the UI’s new indoor practice facility for the installation of the playing surface, and renovating the men’s and women’s basketball locker rooms, to name just a handful of what is a long list of activity that is occurring daily inside the structure.

“It’s progressing nicely. There’s plenty of work to be done, but it is really taking shape. Spaces like the offices for our basketball staffs and the head coaches are, of course, much further along than, for example, the renovation of the old third floor office space, but we’re excited about the progress,” said Jane Meyer, the UI’s senior associate athletics director.
