IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa track and field teams hosted the Iowa Invitational Friday evening at the UI Rec Building. The Hawkeyes completed the event with 13 champions and a new school record in the women’s weight throw.
Sophomore Kelsey Taylor crushed the school record in the weight throw competition, setting the new best mark at 60-4 ½ (18.40m). Taylor’s toss surpassed sophomore Majesty Tutson’s previous record-setting throw by over two feet. Tutson, an Iowa City native, set the record with a throw of 58-4 (17.78m) last weekend at the Iowa State Classic.
Other Hawkeyes dominating in the field events were Rachel Curry and Micaela Haight. The duo finished one-two in the women’s shot put competition. Curry threw the shot 47-9 ¼ (14.56m), while Haight recorded a toss of 45-4 ½ (13.83m), both new collegiate bests for the student-athletes.
Freshman Keelin Gorman made her debut in the mile run, posting a fifth place time of 5:09.46. Fellow freshman Nicole Benson took the crown, winning the race in 5:03.74.
Kelsey Labs sprinted to a first place finish in the 200 meters. The redshirt freshman ran the race in 26.10 seconds, the second best time of the season for the women and a new personal best for herself.
“I think we had some great results today,” Head Coach Layne Anderson said. “There were a lot of highlights especially for our throwing program. I think tonight was the best night we’ve had in my time as a coach and I think it will really help these ladies prepare for the next level of competition. Keelin Gorman also ran a fantastic time in the mile, her first time running that event in her career. We still have a long ways to go, but I think we are well on our way to being able to compete at the Championship level.”
Tevin Mincy edged out Paul Chaney to win the stacked 60 meter dash. Mincy, a freshman from Altoona, Iowa, reached across the line to post a time of 6.86. Chaney finished in a close second with a time of 6.88.
Senior Chris Barton was a champion in the men’s 600 meter run with a time of 1:19.77. Barton, an all-American sprinter in the 4×400 last season, kicked it in during the final stretch to beat out Adam Hairston.
Matt Banse, a native of Strawberry Point, Iowa, posted a collegiate record throw of 64-8 ½ (19.72m) in the weight throw. The junior’s previous best mark was set last weekend at the ISU Classic when he hit 63-11 ½ (19.49m).
“Our sprinters really did a great job today,” said Head Coach Larry Wieczorek. “I think Chris Barton’s 600 meters was the best indoor race he’s run in his entire career. Also, Matt Banse in the weight throw and Kyle Reid coming off an injury to compete well in the pole vault, both had great nights.”
Iowa competes next weekend at the Indoor Big Ten Championships. The 14th ranked men’s team travels to Champaign, Ill. for the event while the women’s event will be held at Purdue University.
