The University of Iowa women’s golf team will compete at the 31st annual Lady Buckeye Invitational April 16-17. The 54-hole tournament, hosted by Ohio State, will be played at the par 72, 6,275-yard Scarlet Course at The Ohio State University Golf Club. Thirty-six holes will be completed on Saturday before Sunday’s final round. Play will begin both days with an 8:30 a.m. (CT) shotgun start. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Kelly Crawford
“We are putting a lot of time into short game this week, as the Scarlet Course can be demanding. We have to do a better job saving strokes around the green. Just one more up and down per player, per round, can make a significant difference in our score and our place in the field.”
The 12-team field will include six teams ranked in the Golfweek top 50, four of which hail from the Big Ten Conference. In-state rival Iowa State, tabbed 16th, is the highest ranked team set to compete. No. 31 Ohio State, the two-time defending champion, won last year’s event after shooting a 919 (304-311-304, +55). Iowa finished 10th in 2010.
SERVING AS A MEASURING STICK
Iowa will face eight Big Ten teams in its final tournament before the Big Ten Championships April 22-24. Conference foes include; Illinois, Indiana, No. 22 Michigan State, No. 38 Minnesota, No. 39 Northwestern, No. 31 Ohio State and Penn State.
BACK-TO-BACK TOP 15’S
Sophomore Kristi Cardwell has finished in the top 15 in Iowa’s last two tournaments. The Kokomo, Ind., native followed a ninth place finish at the Jackrabbit Invitational (78-73-72=223, +10) with an 11th place showing at the Anteater Invitational (71-80-73=224,+11). Cardwell finished in the top 15 in three of Iowa’s five fall tournaments. She placed in the top 15 once during the 2009-2010 season.
