IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa assistant track and field coach Scott Cappos has been named an assistant coach for the 2011 United States Pan American Junior Athletics Championship team.
The Pan American Games (Pan Am Games) is a multi-sport event between competitors from select nations, held every four years in the year before the summer Olympic Games. The 2011 Pan Am Junior Championships will be held July 22-24 in Miramar, Fla.
“This is a tremendous honor and opportunity for Coach Cappos,” said Iowa head track and field coach Larry Wieczorek. “This position is reserved for those who are outstanding for long periods. It’s a great recognition for Coach Cappos and the Iowa track and field program.”
Cappos joined the Iowa staff in 1997 and was named USTFCCCA Men’s Midwest Region Throws Coach of the Year in 2007. During his Iowa tenure, the Hawkeyes have crowned 17 All-Americans and 21 Big Ten champions in field events. The Hawkeyes have also set 20 school records since Cappos arrived on campus.
Cappos, a five-time Canadian national champion, competed in several international competitions including, the Pan American Games in Argentina in 1995.
