DES MOINES, Iowa – Junior Troy Doris was the final Hawkeye to compete at the 2011 NCAA Championships in the men’s triple jump competition Saturday morning. Doris placed fifth overall, making him the first Iowa student-athlete of the meet to score four points and reach the victory stand.
Doris, a Bolingbrook, Ill. native, posted a mark of 52-11 ½ (16.14m) on his first try. The mark secured Doris a spot in the finals, entering as the sixth place competitor. The junior reached his best of 53-3 (16.23m) with his fifth attempt of the day to earn fifth place overall. As a result of his efforts, Doris earned first team All-America distinction.
“I’m not really happy with a fifth place finish,” Doris said following the competition. “It was the best I could do today, but it wasn’t my best.”
The Hawkeye wraps his first season with the Black and Gold with two NCAA appearances in the triple jump, taking sixth at the indoor meet and fifth at the outdoor. Doris was also crowed Big Ten Champion at the outdoor meet in Iowa City, recording a leap of 53-8 ¼, his career best.
“We are a little disappointed because we came here to do big things and had hoped to go up a little farther than he did and really challenge those top two guys,” assistant coach Clive Roberts said. “Our entire goal for this year was to get to the national meet and perform well.”
The Hawkeyes conclude the NCAA Championships with three top-15 finishers, including Doris as the highest finishing student-athlete. Jeffery Herron, 13th in the high jump, and Betsy Flood, 15th in the 5k, also placed among the top-15, earning second team All-America status.
