LINCOLN, Neb. — The University of Iowa women’s golf team is in the third place at the Chip-N Club Invitational after the first two rounds of the 54-hole tournament. The Hawkeyes owned the lead after shooting a first round 307 (+19) before firing a second round 309 (+21) to finish the day at 616 (+40). Iowa trails leader Redlands Community College, who finished runner-up at the 2011 NJCAA National Championship, by three strokes entering Tuesday’s final round.
Monday’s competition marked the first tournament for Iowa under new head coach Megan Menzel.
Juniors Kristi Cardwell and Gigi DiGrazia and freshman Lauren English paced the Hawkeyes, as all three posted 154’s (+10) and finished the day tied for 12th place. Cardwell recorded a team-high four birdies en route to her 154 (78-76), while DiGrazia scored a team-low 76 (+4) during the first round. English fired a pair of 77’s (+5) in her collegiate debut.
Shelby Phillips also played her first round as a Hawkeye. The Gilbert, Ariz., native carded first and second round 78’s (+6) to finish at 156 (+12). She enters the final round in a tie for 21st with teammate Chelsea Harris. Harris, a senior, tied DiGrazia with a team-best 76 (+4) during the first round. Sophomore Karly Grouwinkel also competed for Iowa. She recorded a 173 (87-86, +29) while competing as an individual.
The Hawkeyes will return to the 6,186 yard, par 72 Country Club of Lincoln tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. for the final round.
