LINCOLN, Neb. — The University of Iowa women’s golf team placed third out of 15 teams at the Chip-N Club Invitational. The Hawkeyes fired a final round 309 (+21) to finish the 54-hole tournament, hosted by Nebraska at the 6,186 yard, par 72 Country Club of Lincoln, with a 925 (307-309-309, +61). SMU (312-302-306=920, +18) won the tournament championship, while Redlands Community College (312-301-308, +57) was the team runner-up.
Senior Chelsea Harris led the Hawkeyes during the final round, as she fired a 75 (+3) that included two birdies and an eagle on the par five 11th hole. Harris finished the tournament in a 13th place tied after posting a 231 (76-80-75, +15). Junior Gigi DiGrazia finished the third round one stroke behind Harris with a 76 (+4) after she pared 15 of 18 holes. DiGrazia carded a 230 (76-78-76, +14) to tie for 11th, which was the team-best and set a new career-best.
Freshman Lauren English registered a top-15 finish in her first collegiate tournament. The Bloomington, Ill., native fired a 232 (77-77-78, +16) to end the event in a tie for 15th. Junior Kristi Cardwell finished in a 21st place tie after posting a 54-hole score of 234 (78-76-80, +18). Freshman Shelby Phillips rounded out the Hawkeye scorecard with a 241 (78-78-85, +25).
Sophomore Karly Grouwinkel competed as an individual. She tied a career-best when she fired an 84 (+12) during the third round. She finished with a 257 (87-86-84, +41).
The Hawkeyes tee off next in Albuquerque, N.M., at the Dick McGuire Invitational on Sept. 25-26.
