ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of Iowa women’s golf team fired its first sub-300 round of the season and moved four spots up the leaderboard during the final round of the Dick McGuire Invitational on Monday. The Hawkeyes carded a 298 (+6), the second-best third round score among the 18-team field, to finish in 12th at the 6,187 yard, par 73 UNM Championship Course. Iowa entered the third round in 16th place. The Hawkeyes ended the 54-hole tournament with a 915 (306-311-298, +39). Baylor won the tournament title after posting an 887 (294-298-295, +11).

“It was a great team effort today,” said head coach Megan Menzel. “The course was playing tough and we were mentally the strongest we’ve been all year. I was proud of the way we finished the tournament. Our goal is to finish strong and the team has really bought into that. They played really well today.”

Freshmen Lauren English and Shelby Phillips led the Hawkeyes during the final round. English and Phillips both fired a season-low one over 74 during the final round. English finished in a team-best 26th place tie after shooting a season-best 226 (75-77-74, +7). Phillips also posted a season-best 54-hole score after carding a 230 (78-78-74, +11). She paced the Hawkeyes with four third round birdies and finished the event tied for 48th.

“Our freshmen played awesome,” said Menzel. “I’m very proud of them. They are getting better each time out, which is very exciting to me.”

Junior Kristi Cardwell recorded a season-best 233 (77-73-83, +14). She ended in a tie for 61st. Senior Chelsea Harris finished the tournament a stroke behind Cardwell at 234 (76-83-75, +15). Junior Gigi DiGrazia rounded out the Hawkeyes scorecard with a 236 (78-73-75, +17).
