Hawkeyes Prepare to Face 8 Big Ten Teams

THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa women’s golf team will tee off at the Lady Northern Invitational on Oct. 10-11. Indiana University will host the 54-hole tournament at the 6,037 yard, par 71 Donald Ross Course at the French Lick Resort in French Lick, Ind. Play will commence with 8:30 a.m. (CT) shotgun starts on both Monday (36-holes) and Tuesday (18-holes). Live scoring will be provided at Golfstat.com

THE LINE-UP
Chelsea Harris, Kristi Cardwell, Shelby Phillips, Lauren English and Gigi DiGrazia will fill out the Iowa scorecard. Karly Grouwinkel will compete as an individual.

THE COMPETITION
Iowa will face 11 teams, eight from the Big Ten, at the Lady Northern Invitational on Oct. 10-11. Augusta State (Peach Belt Conference, Division II), Central Florida (C-USA), Illinois (Big Ten), Indiana (Big Ten), Iowa State (Big 12), Michigan (Big Ten), Minnesota, (Big Ten) Nebraska (Big Ten), Ohio State (Big Ten), Penn State (Big Ten) and Wisconsin (Big Ten) are scheduled to compete. Iowa State and Ohio State both received votes in the Golf World/NGCA Coaches’ Poll.

FRENCH LICK FUTURE
The Donald Ross Course at the French Lick Resort in French Lick, Ind., will host the 2012-14 Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships. The course was ranked by Golfweek Magazine as the No. 2 “Best Courses You Can Play” in the state of Indiana. The course features greens that dramatically slope from front to back. The 2012 Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships will be played April 27-29.

HAWKEYES CARD 298
Iowa carded a final round 298 (+6), the team’s first sub-300 round of the year, at the Dick McGuire Invitational on Sept. 26 in Albuquerque, N.M. The score was the second-best third round score among the 18-team field at the 54-hole tournament. The season-best performance helped the Hawkeyes climb four spots on the tournament’s leaderboard. Iowa finished 12th. The Hawkeyes fired five sub-300 rounds during the 2010-11 season.

CARDWELL FIRES FIRST EVEN ROUND
Junior Kristi Cardwell fired an even 73 during the first round at the Dick McGuire Invitational on Sept. 25 in Albuquerque, N.M.. It marked the first time this season that a Hawkeye carded an even round. The score was four strokes higher than Cardwell’s career-best 69, set at the 2010 Challenge at Onion Creek.

FRESHMEN LEAD HAWKEYES ON FINAL DAY
Freshmen Lauren English and Shelby Phillips posted team-best 74’s (+1) during the third round of the Dick McGuire Invitational on Sept. 26 in Albuquerque, N.M.. The score was a season-best for both individuals. In addition, English and Phillips both shot season-best 36- and 54-scores at the tournament. English finished in a tie for 26th, a team-best, at the event.
