MADISON, Wis. — The University of Iowa women’s cross country team finished 18th at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational Friday in Madison, Wis. The Hawkeyes posted a score of 489. Iowa finished the 6K race faster than 26 other teams, including Big Ten rivals Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Northwestern, Nebraska, Ohio State, and Illinois.

Washington won the 44 team event with a score of 199. Washington is ranked 24th nationally. Villanova senior Sheila Reid won the invitational with at time of 19:59.

Senior McKenzie Melander finished first for Iowa and 44th overall, crossing the line in 20:51. Melander was followed by freshman Kayla Beattie (47th, 20:53), seniors Betsy Flood (93rd, 21:12) and Brooke Eilers (127th, 21:27) and junior Kelsey Hart (178th, 21:44). While sophomore Megan Ranegar (208th, 21:56) and graduate student Mareike Schrulle (240th, 22:16) rounded out the Hawkeye lineup.

“I thought it was a solid outing,” said head coach Layne Anderson. “We were a bit off in a few spots, but we are certainly still optimistic about the races ahead.”

The women’s cross country team will return to action Oct. 30 at the Big Ten Championships in Champaign, Ill.
