Hawkeyes Set to Close Fall Season

THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa women’s golf team will close its fall season Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at the 38th annual Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational. The 54-hole tournament will be held at The University of Texas Golf Club, a 6,344 yard, par 72 course in Austin, Texas. Monday (18-holes) and Tuesday (18-holes) play will begin with 8:15 a.m. (CT), split-tee starts. Wednesday (18-holes) will commence with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start. THE LINE-UP
Kristi Cardwell, Lauren English, Chelsea Harris, Gigi DiGrazia and Shelby Phillips will compete for Iowa.

THE COMPETITION
The Hawkeyes will compete against 14 teams; Arizona, Arkansas, Denver, Florida, Kent State, Mississippi State, New Mexico, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, Princeton, Texas , Tulsa, UNLV and Wisconsin. The field includes five teams ranked in the Golf World/NGCA Coaches’ Poll. Florida, ranked ninth, is the highest ranked team in the field, followed by Arizona (12), Arkansas (13), Texas (17) and Oklahoma State (19). New Mexico, Pepperdine and Tulsa received votes.

TOURNAMENT HISTORY
The tournament is named in honor of Betsy Rawls, a 1977 World Golf Hall of Fame inductee who won 50 tour championships from 1951-1975. It is annually one of the top collegiate tournaments. Previous winners of the event include Nancy Lopez (1976), Beth Daniel (1977), Val Skinner (1982), Jody Rosenthal (1984, 1985), Michiko Hattori (1988) and Annika Sorenstam (1992).

CARDWELL SHOOTS SUB-PAR ROUND
Junior Kristi Cardwell carded a one-under 70 during the second round of the Lady Northern Invitational on Oct. 10. It was Iowa’s first sub-par round of the season. On Sept. 25, Cardwell fired an even par 73 at the Dick McGuire Invitational, the Hawkeyes first even round of the season. The Kokomo, Ind., native’s career-low 18-hole score is 69, set last year.

ENGLISH CARDS HOLE-IN-ONE
Freshman Lauren English fired a hole-in-one on the 184 yard, par 3 sixth hole of the Donald Ross Course at the French Lick Resort in French Lick, Ind., on Oct. 11 during the first round of the Lady Northern Invitational

TWO TIED FOR TEAM LEAD, HARRIS ONE BEHIND
Through three fall tournaments, junior Kristi Cardwell and freshman Lauren English lead the team with a 77.3 per round average. Senior Chelsea Harris trails the pair by a single stroke. Harris and Cardwell tied for the team lead in the 2010 fall with a 75.7 average, the third-best scoring average in school history. English is aiming to become the first freshman to lead the team in scoring average since Tyrette Metzendorf paced the team in the 2005 fall (75.8) and 2006 spring (77.2).
