Iowa Inks Indiana Prep

Nov. 10, 2011

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s golf team received a signed National Letter of Intent from Carmel, Ind., native Briana Midkiff on Wednesday. Midkiff, the No. 2 player in Indiana for the class of 2012, is head coach Megan Menzel’s first recruit. Midkiff will join the Hawkeyes in the fall of 2012.

“Briana brings great competitive experience and a strong work ethic on and off the golf course,” said Menzel. “Briana has grown up in a great Hawkeye family and we look forward to having her as part of our team next fall.”

Midkiff led Carmel High School to two runner-up finishes at the Indiana state tournament. She qualified individually for the state tournament all four years of her high school career, placing third as a senior. Midkiff won six of the eight high school tournaments she entered in 2011 en route to posting the third best scoring average in school history.

Midkiff was a four-time all-conference selection, winning the conference championship on two occasions. She garnered Hamilton County Player of the Year honors as a senior and was a four-time all-county selection. The IHSAA named her to the all-state team twice, and she was a two-time team MVP. Her high school coach was Ken Kelly and her swing coach is Mike Abbott.

In the classroom, Midkiff has been scholar athlete for four years, including being the top scholar on the women’s golf team for three years. She was an all-state academic honorable mention selection.

Midkiff signing marks the second-year in a row Iowa has inked a top two player from another state. Current freshmen Lauren English (Bloomington, Ill.) and Shelby Phillips (Gilbert, Ariz.) were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in their respective states as high school seniors.
