Hawkeyes Put On a Show at Annual Intrasquad

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa Track and Field teams opened their indoor season today with the 2011 Black and Gold Intrasquad Meet at the University of Iowa Recreation Building. The men’s competition was won by the gold squad (46), while the black squad claimed the women’s title (43) and the overall victory (88-87).

The women’s 60-meter hurdles featured Khanishah Williams, a freshman from Burlington, Iowa, as the winner with a time of 9.33. Sarah Ryan followed closely behind, posting a time of 9.59. Lena Placzek ran a solid 1,000-meters for the Gold team. The sophomore from Poznan, Poland, recorded a time of 2:58.19. Freshman Maisie Vachuska came in second, finishing at the 3:03.55 mark. Sophomore Shannon Maser ran to a first place finish in the mile with a time of 5:33.14.

Sophomore Raven Moore, seniors Nicole Erickson and Kelsey Mims, and freshman Victoria Sack won the 4X400 meter relay with a time 3:51.77, while junior Hannah Simonson and sophomores Kelsey Quinn, Placzek, and Carisa Leacock came in second crossing the line in 3:58.96.

Sophomore Nathan Prom and senior all-American Erik Sowinski ran neck and neck in the men’s 1000 meter run. . Prom came out on top with a time of 2:24.50 for the gold squad, while Sowinski was right on his heels, posting a time of 2:24.54 for the black squad. Senior all-American Troy Doris won the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.93, while senior all-American Dan Davis ran to a first place finish in the 60-meter hurdles posting a time of 8.19. Keaton Rickels was the top finisher for the Hawkeyes in the 600 meter dash. The junior crossed the line with a personal best time of 1:20.85. Kevin Lewis ran a solid mile for the black squad. The freshman from Ottumwa, Iowa, recorded a time of 4:17.46.

The men’s 4X400 meter relay was a close one. Juniors Justin Austin, Kyle Slaymaker, Ryan Weir, and Sowinski crossed the finish line in 3:16.21 for a first place finish, while freshman Caleb VanCleave, senior D’Juan Richardson, freshman Brennan Davey, and Rickels were close behind posting a time of 3:17.98.

In the field events, freshman Khanishah Williams recorded a 1.78 meter jump in the high jump for a first place finish. Juniors Rachel Curry and Majesty Tutson both posted personal records in the shot put. Curry won the event with a toss of 14.94 meters, while Tutson came in second with a throw of 13.59 meters. Junior Kirsten Weismantle finished first in the pole vault after reaching a personal best height of 3.60 meters, while Tutson took first place in the weight throw with a toss of 17.09 meters.

Senior Jeffery Herron and junior Brandon Oest each recorded personal best marks of 2.10 meters in the high jump. Herron reached the mark first for a first place finish for the gold squad. Freshman Gabe Hull posted a 16.71 meter throw to place first in the shot put. Senior Matt Banse finished first in the weight throw with a toss of 19.55 meters, while junior Kyle Reid reached a height of 4.55 meters to take first place in the pole vault.

The Hawkeyes will return to action with their first official meet Jan. 14 against Illinois.
