Hawkeyes Head to Nationals

Jan. 12, 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa spirit squad is set to compete at the UCA/UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship in Orlando, Fla., on Jan. 13-15. The Hawkeye cheerleaders, dance team and Herky the Hawk will perform at the Walt Disney World Resort.

The UI dance team will compete in both the pom and jazz catagories against 20 other Division I universities. The squad hopes to build off its seventh place performance in the pom and ninth place showing in jazz in 2011.

The Hawkeye cheerleading squad is returning to nationals for the first time in 10 years. With only two seniors on this year’s team, Iowa is looking to use this competition as a building block for the future.

Iowa’s renowned mascot — Herky the Hawk — will perform an entertaining and crowd leading skit that takes many items out of current television, movie and Internet headlines. It will be Herky’s first appearance in at nationals since 2009.

Fans of the Iowa spirit squads can follow the team at www.varsity.com and within that website there is a link to VarsityTV, where the competition will be streamed throughout the weekend.
