Hawkeyes Set to Hit the Road

THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa track and field team travels to Lincoln, Neb., to compete in the Adidas Classic Saturday. The event, held at Devaney Center, is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. The Hawkeyes will compete against Nebraska, Houston, Wichita State, and the Air Force.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
Eighteen freshmen made their Hawkeye debut at the New Year’s Classic on Jan. 14. Three of them recorded first place finishes. Khanishah Williams finished first in the 60-meter hurdles (9.24) and the high jump (5-7 ¾, 1.72m). Annemie Smith took the title in the weight throw (57-3 ¾, 17.47m), while Brittany Holst reached a height of 10-11.75 (3.35m) to finish first in pole vault. Ben Witt ran to a second place finish in the mile with a time of 4:19.32, and Kaleb VanCleave ran a 50.06 in the 400 meters to place second.

IN THE RANKINGS
The Hawkeye men’s team is ranked 16th in the USTFCCCA preseason poll. This weekend the men will face No. 5 Nebraska, while the women’s team will face the 25th-ranked Nebraska women.

THODE BREAKS RECORD
All-American Jeff Thode stole the show at the New Year’s Classic. The junior broke the 44-year old two-mile record (8:54.00) which was previously held by head coach Larry Wieczorek. Thode crossed the line in 8:53.9.

HOST OF PERSONAL BESTS
Six Hawkeyes recorded personal bests at the New Year’s Classic. They include Zinnia Miller (long jump), Raven Moore (60-meters), Erin Jones (400-meters), Brooke Eilers (mile), Rachel Curry (shot put), and Ashlyn Gulvas (weight throw).

MULLEN RETURNS
Hawkeye junior Jordan Mullen returned to the track Jan. 14 at the New Year’s Classic. Mullen ran to a first place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.87. The appearance was Mullen’s first competition since the Drake Relays held on April 30, 2011. Mullen holds the school indoor record in the 60-meter hurdles (7.75).

CRACKIN’ THE TOP TEN Three Hawkeye women etched their names onto the all-time top ten performers list. Annemie Smith (57-3 3/4 ;17.47m), Ashlyn Gulvas (54-4 ;16.56m) and Jasmine Simpson (50-6 3/4;15.41m) rank fourth, seventh, and 10th on the weight throw top performers list.

The Hawkeyes will travel to Fayetteville, Ark. Jan. 27-28 for the Razorback Invitational.
