VICTORIA, Texas — The University of Iowa women’s golf team is in third place after 36 holes at the Claud Jacobs Challenge presented by SCOR golf. The Hawkeyes carded a 621 (309-312, +45) on Sunday at the 6,087-yard, par 72 Victoria Country Club in Victoria, Texas. Iowa enters Monday’s final round trailing host Texas State (307-296-303, +27) and Lamar (319-192=511, +43). (Lamar had not finished its second round when this recap was posted.)
“It was great to get out and compete today,” said UI head coach Megan Menzel. “The player’s confidence got stronger throughout the day and we look forward to finishing strong tomorrow.”
Hawkeye juniors Kristi Cardwell and Gigi DiGrazia ended the first round in a first-place tie. Cardwell and DiGrazia both posted 74’s (+2). Cardwell shot a second-round 76 (+4) to finish the day with a 36-hole score of 150 (+6). She enters the third round in fourth place. DiGrazia followed her first-round 74, which tied a career-best, with a 79 (+7). She ended the day tied for eighth at 153 (+9). DiGrazia posted a team-high five birdies.
Senior Chelsea Harris fired a 158 (82-76, +14), finishing the day tied for 27th. Freshman Lauren English was two strokes off Harris’ pace, as she recorded a 160 (79-81, +16). English begins the final round tied for 33rd.
Freshman Shelby Phillips carded a 165 (82-83, +21) to complete the Hawkeye scorecard.
The third and final round commences Monday at 8 a.m. (CT), with a shotgun start.
