Hawkeyes Ready for Big Ten Indoor Championships

THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa track and field team travels to Lincoln, Neb. to compete at the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday. The meet will be held at Devaney Center Indoor Track on the University of Nebraska campus. The championships are scheduled to begin Friday at 10 a.m. and continue through Saturday. 2011 MEN’S BIG TEN INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Hawkeye men finished fourth as a team at last year’s Indoor Big Ten Championships. The team crowned six athletes in three events. Justin Austin took the 200 meter title running a time of 21.23, while Troy Doris took the title in the triple jump with his leap of 52-6 (16.00m). The 1,600-meter relay team also earned a Big Ten title. The team of Patrick Richards, Ethan Holmes, Erik Sowinski, and Steven Willey ran a time of 3:12.13 to finish first.

2011 WOMEN’S BIG TEN INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Hawkeye women tied for eighth place at last year’s Big Ten Indoor Championships. Betsy Flood was the runner up in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters. Flood ran both races in career record-setting times. Ashley Liverpool earned a second place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 54.79. The women’s 1,600-meter relay team also captured a second place finish. The team of Liverpool, Tiffany Hendricks, Nicole Erickson, and Bethany Praska ran a time of 3:40.38.

AUSTIN GETS BIG TEN RECOGNITION
Junior Justin Austin was recognized Monday as the Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week. Austin earned a first place finish in the 60 meters (6.97) and the 200 meters (21.48) Feb.17 at the Iowa Invitational. His 200 meter converted time (21.08) ranks second in the Big Ten and 13th nationally. Austin’s 60 meter time is ranked seventh in the Big Ten.

DORIS RANKED THIRD IN NATION
Senior Troy Doris’s triple jump leap of 53-5 (16.28m) at the Razorback Invitational ranks first in the Big Ten. That mark also ranks third in the nation. Doris currently holds the triple jump record at Iowa (54-0; 16.46m).

SOWINSKI IN TOP 20
Erik Sowinski is ranked third in the conference for his performance in the 600 meters at the adidas Classic. Sowinksi ran a time of 1:16.91 to break the school record. Sowinski is also ranked fifth in the Big Ten in the 800 meters. His 800 meter time of 1:48.58 ranks 13th in the nation.

SCHRULLE AMONG TOP FIVE
Graduate Student Mareike Schrulle is ranked fifth in the Big Ten in the 3,000 meters. Schrulle’s time of 9:23.97 ranks seventh all-time at Iowa.

LIVERPOOL RANKED SIXTH
Sophomore Ashley Liverpool is currently ranked sixth in the Big Ten in the 400 meters. Liverpool ran a time of 54.82 at the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational on Feb. 3. Liverpool’s personal best mark of 54.09 currently ranks fourth all-time at Iowa.

Seven Hawkeyes on the 2012 roster account for 10 individual school records. They include: Justin Austin: 60 (6.69) and 200 meters (20.80) Troy Doris: Triple Jump (54-0/16.46m) McKenzie Melander: Mile (4:39.78) Jordan Mullen: 60-meter hurdles (7.75) Erik Sowinski: 600 (1:16.91) and 800 meters (1:47.98) Kelsey Taylor: Weight Throw (60-4 1/2/18.40) Jeff Thode: Mile (3:58.72) and 3,000 meters (8:00.38)
