O’AHU, Hawaii– The University of Iowa women’s golf team finished in ninth place at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in Kane’ohe, O’ahu, Hawaii. The Hawkeyes fired a third round 318 (+30) on Wednesday to end the 54-hole tournament with a score of 938 (308-312-318, +74).
“We had a tough day but I know this team will rally and work hard over the next month to finish up strong,” said head coach Megan Menzel.
UI senior Chelsea Harris used a team-high three birdies to fire a 74 (+2) during the final 18 holes, her best round of the tournament. Harris finished tied for ninth place, a season-best, with a 54-hole score of 227 (77-76-74, +11).
“Chelsea had a very solid tournament,” said Menzel. “She handled a difficult course very patiently.”
Junior Kristi Cardwell also played her best round of the event on Wednesday, as she carded a 78 (+6). Cardwell ended tied for 62nd with a score of 244 (83-83-78, +28). Fellow junior Gigi DiGrazia posted a 240 (75-83-82, +24) to finish tied for 52nd.
Freshmen Shelby Phillips and Lauren English both shot final round 84’s (+12). Phillips recorded a three-round score of 235 (76-75-84, +19). She placed tied for 31st, a season-best. English ended in 59th place with a 242 (80-78-84, + 26).
Freshman Nicole Rae fired a 263 (88-87-88, +47) while competing as an individual.
Texas A&M was crowned tournament champions after firing a 901 (303-300-298, +37). UC Davis (298-310-297=905, +41) and Gonzaga (302-300-308, +44) joined the Aggies in the top three. The 14-team field competed at the 5,907 yard, par 72 Kane’ohe Klipper Golf Course on the Marine Corps Base. Hawai’i was the host school.
The Hawkeyes return to the mainland to play March 25-26 at the Saluki Invitational in Carbondale, Ill.
