CARBONDALE, Ill. — The University of Iowa women’s golf team finished second out of 17 teams at the Saluki Invitational on Monday in Carbondale, Ill. The Hawkeyes fired a 309 (+21) for the second consecutive round, finishing the 36-hole tournament with a 618 (309-309, +42).
“We walked away from this tournament disappointed, but I know the team is determined to work hard and finish the season strong,” said head coach Megan Menzel.
UI senior Chelsea Harris finished in a career-best second place tie, besting a fourth place finish at the Hawkeye Invitational on Aug. 18-19, 2010. Harris carded a 36-hole score of 148 (72-76, +4) to tie with IUPUI’s Jordan Essman.
“Chelsea had two solid rounds and gained great experience competing for a tournament title,” said Menzel.
Junior Kristi Cardwell moved 23 spots up the leaderboard during the second round, finishing tied for 10th. Cardwell posted a three-over 75 to end the tournament with a 156 (81-75, +12). Freshman Lauren English concluded the event a stoke behind Cardwell at 157 (80-77, +13). She placed tied for 16th. Fellow freshman Shelby Phillips fired a second round 82 (+10) to finish tied for 24th with a 159 (77-82, +15). Junior Gigi DiGrazia completed the Iowa scorecard at 161 (80-81, +17)
Host Southern Illinois (301-307=608, +21) won the 36-hole tournament for the second straight season. The Salukis held the event at the 6,075 yard, par 72 Hickory Ridge Golf Course.
The Hawkeyes compete next on April 9-11 at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Chandler, Ariz.
