CHANDLER, Ariz. — The University of Iowa women’s golf team posted a second-round 301 (+13) on Tuesday at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Chandler, Ariz., bringing their two-round total to 590 (289-301, +14). The Hawkeyes enter Wednesday’s final round in second place, trailing leader Colorado State (292-292=584, +8) by six strokes.
“Kristi (Cardwell) had another really solid day,” said head coach Megan Menzel. “As a team, we struggled on the back nine and had too many big numbers. I hope we find a way to bring better focus for the whole round tomorrow. If we do, I feel like we have a great chance at winning the tournament.”
UI junior Kristi Cardwell finished the day with a career-best and school-record 36-hole score of 138 (68-70, -6), breaking teammate Chelsea Harris’ 140 set at the 2009 Challenge at Onion Creek. Cardwell’s previous two-round low score was a 143, set at the 2010 Challenge at Onion Creek. Cardwell fired a three-under 33 on the front nine en route to a second round 70 (-2). The Kokomo, Ind., native holed a team-high five birdies. Cardwell sits in second place entering the third round, two strokes off the pace of Colorado State’s Brianna Espinoza (68-68=136, -8).
Three Hawkeyes, Shelby Phillips, Lauren English and Chelsea Harris, shot five-over 77’s during the second round. Phillips, a freshman from Gilbert, Ariz., finished tied for 22nd at 150 (73-77, +6). English, also a freshman, concluded Tuesday tied for 31st with a 151 (74-77, +7). Harris, Iowa’s lone senior, will enter the final round in a 47th place tie. Harris carded a 36-hole score of 153 (76-77, +9).
Sophomore Karly Grouwinkel completed the Hawkeye scorecard with a 155 (74-81, +11), the best 36-hole score of her career. Her previous best was a 160, set at the 2010 Hawkeye Invitational.
Iowa’s team score of 590 was the fourth-lowest two-round total in school history.
Wyoming is hosting the 54-hole tournament at the 6,184 yard, par 72 Ocotillo Golf Resort.
