IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa volleyball team will open the 2012 season Aug. 24-25 on Mediacom Court at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Head coach Sharon Dingman and the UI Department of Athletics released the upcoming schedule today.
The Hawkeyes host 14 games on their home floor, beginning with Hawkeye Challenge on Aug. 24-25. They’ll then navigate a non-conference schedule that continues the Oakland Tournament in Rochester, Mich., the Iowa State Invitational in Ames, Iowa, and the Marquette Tournament in Milwaukee, Wis.
Iowa’s 20-match conference schedule includes dates against fifteen 2011 NCAA tournament qualifiers. The Big Ten season begins with trips to Ohio State and Penn State on Sept. 21-22, and ends with a home date against 2011 NCAA runner-up Illinois on Nov. 24. Iowa’s home match with the Illini is the only regular season matchup between the two schools. The Hawkeyes also have just one match versus Northwestern (Oct. 21 in Evanston). All nine remaining Big Ten opponents are scheduled for a home-and-home series.
Iowa has three midweek dates on the 2012 schedule, including home matches against Nebraska (Oct. 17) and Penn State (Oct. 24), and a road trip to Lincoln, Neb. (Nov. 21).
The first round of the NCAA Tournament starts Nov. 29 at campus sites to be determined. The NCAA Regionals begin Dec. 7 and the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Kent., begin Dec. 13.
Iowa’s televised matches will be announced later this summer.
The Hawkeyes return four starters and 11 letterwinners from last year’s squad. The Hawkeyes ranked in the top 30 in national attendance last year for the third consecutive season. Iowa has set season attendance records in two of Dingman’s four seasons at the helm of the program.
