COLUMBUS, Ohio — The University of Iowa women’s golf team carded a 36-hole score of 638 (325-313, +62) on Saturday at the Lady Buckeye Invitational. The Hawkeyes enter Sunday’s third and final round in eighth place.
“It was definitely a challenging day of weather conditions,” said head coach Megan Menzel. “We settled in a little slow today, but I’m proud of our effort in finishing the day strong.”
Freshman Shelby Phillips led Iowa during the first two rounds with a 156 (81-75, +12), ending the day tied for 16th place. The Gilbert, Ariz., native fired a second round 75 (+3), the lowest 18-hole score by a Hawkeye on Saturday.
“Shelby had a great approach mentally to the conditions today,” said Menzel. “Her approach paid off with a great second round that ended with two birdies.”
Fellow freshman Lauren English finished three strokes behind Phillips at 156 (79-80, +15). English will begin the third round tied for 31st.
Junior Kristi Cardwell it tied for 42nd after posting a two round total of 162 (82-80, +18). Senior Chelsea Harris was one stroke off Cardwell’s pace, as she recorded a 163 (85-78, +19). Harris is tied for 46th.
Junior Gigi DiGrazia (83-84=167, +23) and sophomore Karly Grouwinkel (90-83=173, +29) rounded out the Iowa scorecard.
Host Ohio State leads the 11-team field at 605 (308-297, +29). Big Ten foes Northwestern (313-300=613, +37) and Michigan State (312-301=613, +37) are tied for second place. The Buckeyes are holding the 54-tournament at the 6,268 yard, par 72 Scarlet Course at The Ohio State University Golf Club.
The Hawkeyes conclude play at the Lady Buckeye Invitational tomorrow beginning with an 8:30 a.m. (CT) shotgun start.
