COLUMBUS, Ohio — The University of Iowa women’s golf team took eighth place at the Lady Buckeye Invitational on Sunday with a 54-hole score of 850 (325-313-312, +86). The Hawkeyes carded their lowest round of the tournament Sunday, shooting a third round 312 (+24).
Iowa improved 47 strokes from last year’s Lady Buckeye Invitational. The Hawkeyes shot a 997 (326-331-340, +133) at the 2011 Lady Buckeye Invitational.
“I was glad to see our scores get a little better each day,” said head coach Megan Menzel. “The Scarlet Course is definitely a great challenge”
Senior Chelsea Harris fired an even 72 during the final round, bringing her three round total to 235 (85-78-72, +19). Harris finished tied for 25th, a team best. Freshman Shelby Phillips finished four spots behind Harris, as she tied for 29th. Phillips carded a 237 (81-75-81, +21) at the event.
“Chelsea’s final round was fun to watch and a great performance by a senior,” said Menzel.
Junior Kristi Cardwell posted her best round of the Lady Buckeye on Sunday. Cardwell registered a 76 (+4) that included back-to-back birdies on holes two and three. The Kokomo, Ind., native ended with a three round total of 238 (82-80-76, +22). She finished tied for 33rd. Fellow Junior Gigi DiGrazia recorded a 54-hole score of 252 (83-84-85, +34). Sophomore Karly Grouwinkel completed the Hawkeye scorecard with a 256 (90-83-83, +38).
Host Ohio State (75-69-68=212, -4) was crowned tournament champions at the 6,268 yard, par 72 Scarlet Course at The Ohio State University Golf Club. Michigan State (312-301-297=910, +46) and Iowa State (310-307-304=921, +57) rounded out the top three.
The Hawkeyes begin postseason play April 27-29 at the Big Ten Championships, hosted at the French Lick Resort in French Lick, Ind.
