IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa volleyball team opened its season Saturday night with the annual Black and Gold Scrimmage inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Fans turned out to Mediacom Court to get their first look at the 2012 Hawkeyes.

The Black and Gold teams played four sets, three to 25 points and a final 15-point set. UI head coach Sharon Dingman was pleased with the results.

“It was really fun,” said Dingman. “Our crowd was great. I have not seen a crowd at a Black and Gold Scrimmage like that in my first four years here. It gave our players a sense of what it will be like when they step out on the court next Friday.”

Junior Nikki Dailey dished out a game-high 25 assists, while freshman Anne Yanda added 19. Junior Bethany Yeager led the way with 19 digs. Sophomore Emily Yanny paced the Hawkeyes with 15 kills.

Iowa opens the regular season Aug. 24-25 with the annual Hawkeye Challenge presented by Comfort Suites. The Hawkeyes open the tournament hosting Chicago State on Friday, Aug. 24 at noon inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
