Hawkeyes Win Early Bird Open

MACOMB, Ill. – The University of Iowa men’s and women’s cross country teams grabbed the title at the Western Illinois Early Bird Open Friday. The men’s team turned in a team score of 18, while the women tallied a score of 21.

Sophomore Kevin Lewis won the 6K men’s event when he crossed the line in 18:35. Junior Jon Michael Brandt (18:44) and Sam Chaney (18:53) finished second and third, respectively, while freshman Anthony Gregorio clocked a time of 18:58 to finish fifth. Freshmen Taylor Soltys (7th; 19:10) and Sam Fourman (8th; 19:12) rounded out the Hawkeye line-up.

“Both teams ran very well,” said head men’s cross country coach Larry Wieczorek. “I think we accomplished our goal of getting off to a strong start.”

Junior Katherin Rehn took the title in the women’s 4K, clocking a time of 14:51. Junior Lena Placzek followed close behind finishing second with a time of 15:05. Redshirt freshman Jocelyn Todd ran to a fourth place finish with a time of 15:41, while redshirt freshman Rachel Price (15:52) finished sixth. Brook Bierhaus, a redshirt freshman, rounded out the Hawkeye line-up finishing eighth with a time of 16:10.

“It was a great start for the Hawkeyes getting an individual and team win,” said head women’s cross country coach Layne Anderson. “It’s a great meet to build off of.”

The Hawkeyes will return to action Sept. 7 at the Bradley Open in Peoria, Ill.
