ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of Iowa women’s golf team finished its final round Tuesday at the Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire Invitational, placing 13th in a field of 17 teams. The Hawkeyes fired a team total 306 (+14) in their final round, matching their first round score on Monday. Iowa carded a 54-hole score of 919 (+43).

“I was proud of our team for finishing the round well today,” head coach Menzel said. “We put three better rounds together this week and we’ll continue working hard to get better each week as the season progresses.”

Building off of her first career hole-in-one, senior Kristi Cardwell once again lead the way for the Black and Gold, firing a final round total of 74 (+1). Cardwell tied for ninth in a field of 93 golfers with a 220 (+1). She began her round strong with a birdie on hole No. 13, but then had a double bogey on hole No. 15. Cardwell immediately responded with a birdie on hole No. 16 and then managed to par 13 out of the remaining 14 holes.

“It was a great week for Kristi,” Menzel said. “She put together three solid rounds and this was a very strong field so finishing in the top-10 was a great accomplishment.”

Sophomore Shelby Phillips had her best round of the tournament Tuesday carding a final round total of 76 (+3). Phillips played steady golf throughout her round, playing the first seven holes one-under par. Phillips racked up 14 pars in her final round and finished tied for 43rd individually with a three-round score of 231 (+12).

Senior Gigi DiGrazia got off to a shaky start in her final round on Tuesday, bogeying her first four holes. DiGrazia finished strong and rattled off a streak of 10 pars and two birdies on her final 12 holes to finish with a 77 (+4). DiGrazia placed tied for 76th individually with a 54-hole mark of 238 (+19).

Sophomore Lauren English had her best round of the tournament as well, carding a final round score of 79 (+6). English finished her round on a high note, as she shot one-under par on her final 10 holes, birdying holes No. 7 and 9, respectively. English placed 79th individually with a 239 (+20).

Freshman Briana Midkiff rounded out Iowa’s lineup, shooting a final round 81 (+8). Midkiff had nine pars in her final round and finished with a birdie on hole No. 13.

The Hawkeyes return to action on Oct. 1 at the Johnnie Ihmes Invitational in Columbia, MO.
