Hawkeyes Travel to Roy Griak Invitational

THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa men’s and women’s cross country team will compete at the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday. The event will be held at the University of Minnesota Les Bolstad Golf Course in Minneapolis. The men’s 8,000-meter race is set to begin at 12:20 p.m., while the women’s 6,000 meters will start at 1:10 p.m.

IN THE RANKINGS
Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams are ranked in the USTFCCCA Regional rankings. The women’s team is ranked fourth in the Midwest Region, while the men are ranked ninth.

HOLMES NAMED CAPTAIN
Senior Nick Holmes has been named the men’s cross country captain. The Peoria, Ill. native is a former NCAA all-Region honoree. Holmes was the top finisher for the Hawkeyes in the 2011 Roy Griak Invitational. He finished 20th in the 8,000 meters event with a time of 24:36.

BEATTIE’S SUCCESS CONTINUES
Sophomore Kayla Beattie has been Iowa’s top finisher in each of the last two meets. Beattie won the three-mile Bradley Open (16:44) on Sept. 7 and finished 17th at the 4K Toledo Bubble Buster (13:41).

2011 ROY GRIAK INVITE
The Hawkeye men’s team competed in the 2011 Roy Griak Invitational. The team finished 18th out of 24 teams and tallied a team score of 482. Nick Holmes was the top finisher for the Hawkeyes (20th; 24:36) in the 8,000-meter event.

ALL-TIME TOP TEN
A pair of Hawkeyes will try to improve upon their personal best performances this weekend. Sophomore Kayla Beattie’s personal-best 6,000 meters time of 20:54 ranks seventh all-time at Iowa, while graduate student Mareike Schrulle’s time of 21:12 ties for tenth all-time.

2012 BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2012 Big Ten Cross Country Championships will be hosted by Michigan State University. The event will be held Oct. 28 in East Lansing, Mich.

UP NEXT
The men’s and women’s cross country teams will return to action on Oct. 12-13. The women’s team will head to Madison, Wis. for the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational on Oct. 12, while the men’s team will travel to Louisville, Ky., for the Pre-National Invitational on Oct. 13.
