Hawkeye Men Finish 6th at Roy Griak Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Iowa men’s cross country team finished sixth at the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday. The 8,000-meter event was held at the University of Minnesota Les Bolstad Golf Course. The Hawkeyes were paced by junior Jon Michael Brandt and tallied a team score of 186.

Brandt was the first Hawkeye to cross the line. The junior recorded a time of 25:20 to finish 24th. Sophomore Kevin Lewis and senior captain Nick Holmes followed close behind. Lewis finished 26th with a time of 25:28, while Holmes clocked a time of 25:35 to finish 31st. Freshmen Anthony Gregorio (54th; 26:06) and Taylor Soltys (57th; 26:07), junior Cameron Rieger (62nd; 26:13), and sophomore Ben Witt (70th; 26:21) rounded out the Hawkeye lineup.

“We had some real positives,” said head men’s cross country coach Larry Wieczorek. “I think Brandt and our two freshmen (Gregorio and Soltys) had positive performances today. We can learn from this meet and look forward.”

Three Hawkeyes competed in the 6,000-meter women’s event. Graduate student Mareike Schrulle recorded a fifth place finish when she crossed the line in 21:17, while Junior Megan Ranegar finished 19th with a time of 21:52. Senior Kelsey Hart also ran for the Hawkeyes. The team captain earned a 57th place finish with a time of 22:41.

The men’s and women’s cross country teams will return to action on Oct. 12-13. The women’s team will head to Madison, Wis., for the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational on Oct. 12, while the men’s team will travel to Louisville, Ky., for the Pre-National Invitational on Oct. 13.
