LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Iowa men’s cross country team finished 33rd out of 40 teams at the Pre-National Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Hawkeyes turned in a team score of 782. The 8,000-meter event was held at the E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.
Iowa’s top three finishers all recorded sub 25-minute times. Senior captain Nick Holmes crossed the finish line first for the Hawkeyes. Holmes clocked a time of 24:18 to finish 81st overall. Sophomores Kevin Lewis (189th; 25:09) and Ben Witt (221st; 25:32) rounded out the Hawkeye scoring.
“I am particularly happy with our top three finishers (Holmes, Brandt, and Gregorio),” said men’s cross country coach Larry Wieczorek. “We have three pieces of the puzzle, and if we can get the fourth and fifth men there then I think we will be an improved team by the Big Ten Championships.”
The Hawkeyes will have a week off before heading to the Big Ten Cross Country Championships in East Lansing, Mich. Michigan State University will host the event. The Championships will be held at the Forest Akers East Golf Course.
