EAST LANSING, Mich. – University of Iowa graduate student Mareike Schrulle recorded a second place finish at the Big Ten Cross Country Championships on Sunday. Both UI teams earned 10th place finishes. The event was hosted by Michigan State University at the Forest Akers East Golf Course.

Michigan won the 6,000-meter women’s event with a team score of 55. Schrulle paced the Hawkeyes. The graduate student crossed the line in 20:17 to finish second overall. Junior Megan Ranegar (50th; 21:29), senior Nicole Benson (51st; 21:29), senior Kelsey Hart (54th; 21:35), and freshmen Cindy Saliba (71st; 22:06), Lisa Gordon (76th; 22:21), and Courtney Martin (77th; 22:27) rounded out the Hawkeye lineup. The Hawkeyes recorded a team score of 228.

“It was an outstanding day for Mareike (Schrulle),” said head women’s cross country coach Layne Anderson. “Our inability to overcome injuries today really kept us from being the type of competitive team we expected. We needed Kayla (Beattie) in the lineup and for a healthy Megan Ranegar to race to our true potential.”

Wisconsin took the men’s 8,000-meter team title with a team score of 33. Senior Nick Holmes was the first finisher for the Hawkeyes. Holmes crossed the line in 24:34 to finish 31st. Sophomore Ben Witt (50th; 24:55), junior Jon Michael Brandt (59th; 25:07), sophomore Kevin Lewis (62nd; 25:13), and freshmen Caleb Wilfong (65th; 25:17), Anthony Gregorio (67th; 25:28), and Taylor Soltys (68th; 25:30) rounded out the Hawkeye lineup. The men posted a team score of 267.

The Hawkeyes will return to action Nov. 9 at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Springfield, Mo.
