Hawk Talk Monthly: December Edition

Nov. 29, 2012

Editor’s Note: Hawk Talk Monthly presented by Transamerica digs a little deeper and provides a little more color — think photography — for fans of the Hawkeyes than Hawk Talk Daily, which will continue to be delivered to more than 80,000 black-and-gold email boxes every day of the year. The December 2012 HTM includes a cover story on the Iowa field hockey team adding to its rich tradition, a 24 Hawkeyes to Watch feature on men’s basketball junior Roy Devyn Marble, a season preview of the UI wrestling team and a story on the Ferentz family growing up Hawkeyes and much more, including some tremendous and exclusive photography. IOWA CITY, Iowa — It speaks to the tradition of excellence within the University of Iowa field hockey program when the norm consists of competing for championships and playing in the NCAA Tournament on a yearly basis.

The Hawkeyes added to the program’s mystique with a 22nd NCAA Tournament appearance – the most of any school as a member of the Big Ten Conference – during the 2012 season. The NCAA berth was the second consecutive for the program, and the sixth in nine years.

“We have been gradually building over the last 3-4 years, but to replicate what we did last year, and do it back-to-back, says a lot about the consistency we bring and our fortitude,” said UI head coach Tracey Griesbaum, who has guided the Hawkeyes to the NCAAs six times, including the program’s 11th Final Four appearance in 2008. “You can’t say you’re going to be good because you’re losing this many seniors, but each year is completely new with a clean slate. It was a great accomplishment, and it is our standard.”
