Dec. 21, 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Former Hawkeye All-Americans Meghan (Armstrong) Peyton and McKenzie Melander have been named to the U.S. team that will compete at the Bupa Great Edinburgh International Cross Country meet in Scotland on Jan. 5.

“It is a great honor to represent your country in International competition and we are certainly very proud of McKenzie and Meghan for their selection to the U.S. team,” said UI head coach Layne Anderson. “I would expect that both will compete very well as it took a quality performance to earn selection to the team.”

Melander is a 2012 graduate of the University of Iowa and was recently named team MVP following a senior season that included second team All-America honors and a Big Ten championship. She was a six-time academic All-Big Ten honoree and owns the school record in the indoor mile.

Peyton was a four-time All-American and two-time Big Ten champion while competing for the Hawkeyes from 2005-08. She graduated as the school record holder in the 1,500 meters and was Iowa’s female Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient in 2008. She was also a six-time academic All-Big Ten honoree.

The U.S. team for Edinburgh consists of a nine-member senior women’s team that will run a 6 km race. The first six athletes on each will score at the meet. This is the third year the U.S. has participated in the international cross country meet.
