AMES, Iowa – University of Iowa track and field athletes Jordan Mullen and Jasmine Simpson recorded school recorded setting performances at the Bill Bergan Invitational on Saturday. The Hawkeyes did not send their entire teams to the event; however, the men tied for third place with a total of 64 points.
Mullen took the title in the men’s 60-meter hurdles when he crossed the line in a school record setting time of 7.74. Mullen set the previous school record of 7.75 at the Jack Johnson Classic on Jan. 22, 2011. Senior Ethan Holmes also recorded a personal best in the hurdles. He grabbed a second-place finish with a time of 7.83. That time ranks second all-time at Iowa.
Simpson, a junior, earned a third-place finish in the women’s weight throw with a school recorded setting toss of 62-6 ½ (19.06m). Junior Ashlyn Gulvas finished fifth in the event with a personal best throw of 60-10 ¾ (18.56m). That mark ranks second all-time at Iowa.
Holmes took the title in the men’s 400 meters when he crossed the line in a personal best time of 47.63. That time ranks ninth all-time at Iowa. Sophomore Kaleb VanCleave ran to a fourth-place finish in the event with a personal best time of 48.40, while sophomore Brennan Davey finished seventh posting a time of 48.63.
“We didn’t have our entire teams here today, but I felt we got better in a lot of areas,” Larry Wieczorek, director of track and field said. “The school record setting performances by Jordan Mullen, Jasmine Simpson, and Kyle Reid (Friday) were definitely highlights. Overall, it was a great competition between great teams.”
Junior Nathan Prom and senior Ryan Weir finished third and fourth, respectively, in the men’s 800 meters. Prom crossed the line in a personal best time of 1:50.75. That time ranks fourth all-time at Iowa, while Weir’s personal best time of 1:50.97 ranks fifth.
Keith Brown ran to a fifth-place finish in the men’s 200 meters. The sophomore posted a time of 22.05.
Freshman Kevin Spejcher and senior Brandon Oest competed in the high jump for the Hawkeye men. Spejcher cleared the 6-10 ¼ (2.09m) mark to finish third, while Oest earned a fifth-place finish with a leap of 6-6 ¼ (1.99m).
Sophomore Gabe Hull recorded a third-place finish in the men’s shot put with a toss of 53-10 ½ (16.42m). Andrew Carmen also competed in the event. The junior finished eighth with a toss of (50-0 ¾; 15.26m).
The men’s 1,600-meter relay team of VanCleave, senior Keaton Rickels, Davey, and Holmes posted a season best relay time of 3:10.97 to finish third, while the team of senior Kyle Slaymaker, Weir, Mullen, and Prom earned a fifth-place finish with a time of 3:17.29.
Sophomore Brittany Holst cleared a personal best height of 11-3 ¾ (3.45m) to finish eighth in the women’s pole vault. That mark ranks fourth all-time at Iowa. Junior Katie Truedson and senior Kirsten Weismantle tied for ninth in the event with vaults of 10-10 (3.30m).
Senior Majesty Tutson recorded a personal best toss of 44-8 (13.61m) to finish ninth in the women’s shot put. Senior Rachel Curry (43-11 ¼; 13.39m) and junior Courtney Fritz (42-11; 13.08m) recorded 10th and 11th place finishes, respectively.
Iowa will travel to Notre Dame, Ind., to compete in the Meyo Invite on Feb. 1-2.
