MESA, Ariz. — The University of Iowa women’s golf team picked up two wins this week over spring break, defeating Harvard and in-state rival Iowa State. Both matches were held at the Red Mountain Ranch Country Club (par 72) in Mesa, Ariz.

The Hawkeyes took on Harvard on Monday in a stroke play event and recorded their first win of the week. Iowa was led by the talented freshman duo of Briana Midkiff and Amy Ihm, who each carded rounds in the 70’s. Midkiff paced Iowa with a 77 and Ihm was next with a 79.

Iowa defeated the rival Cyclones, 8-7, in a match play setting on Tuesday. A total of three points were on the line in each individual match; one for the front nine, one for the back and one for the overall match.

The Hawkeyes were led by senior Kristi Cardwell, who fired a 70 (-2) to claim all three points in her match. Ihm and sophomore Lauren English each tallied two points, with Ihm winning the front nine and the overall point and English recording wins on the back nine and the overall point.

“It was great to get two wins this week,” head coach Megan Menzel said. “It’s always fun to compete and come away with a win against an in-state rival. We had a great golf course for the competitions this week and it really helped the players see where they are at with their games.

“We really gained some confidence from our seven day trip,” Menzel said. “Now, we look forward to carrying that into our final tournaments of the season.”

The Hawkeyes return to action on April 1 in Austin, Texas at the Challenge at Onion Creek.
