Hawkeyes End Day 1 in 11th

FRENCH LICK, Ind. — The University of Iowa women’s golf team sits in 11th place after Friday’s first round of the Big Ten Championships. The Hawkeyes shot a 313 (+25) on the 6,121-yard, par 72 Donald Ross Golf Course at the French Lick Resort in French Lick, Ind.

Senior Kristi Cardwell paced the Hawkeyes after firing a 77 (+5) in her first round. Cardwell shot 12 holes at or below par in her first round, putting her in a tie for 29th place.

Sophomore Lauren English played steady golf carding a 78 (+6). English also shot 12 holes at or below par on day one finishing tied for 34th.

Freshman Briana Midkiff and senior Gigi DiGrazia both carded 79’s (+7) in their first rounds to finish the day tied for 40th place. Midkiff strung together seven-straight pars on the front nine, while DiGrazia had 10 holes at or below par.

Sophomore Shelby Phillips and Nicole Rae posted eight-over par 80’s and are tied for 51st. Phillips collected 10 pars on day one while Rae had 10 holes at or below par.

“We didn’t get it going today,” said head coach Megan Menzel. “If we stay patient and clean up some bogeys tomorrow we will make a nice move up the leader board.”
