DES MOINES, Iowa – The University of Iowa track and field team recorded three second-place finishes at the Drake Relays on Saturday. The Drake Relays were held at the Jim Duncan Track and the Johnny Bright Field on the campus of Drake University.
Lake Kwaza sprinted to a second-place finish in the women’s 100 meters. The freshman clocked a personal-best time of 11.60. That time ties for fifth all-time at Iowa, and currently ranks fourth in the Big Ten.
“Coach told me to get out and that was the main thing I was focusing on,” said Kwaza. “I was thinking way too much about my start and getting ahead of everyone. Once I saw the girls starting to slow down I kicked it in. I think I started to pull away when she started to slow down.”
Senior Justin Austin earned a second-place finish in the men’s 100 meters. Austin sprinted to the front of the pack right out of the blocks. He clocked a season-best time of 10.22. His time currently ranks first in the Big Ten and ties for 12th nationally.
“My start is usually the part I struggle with,” said Austin. “We’ve been working so hard on trying to get a nice start and it came together. We are making really good strides. This is my second fastest 100-meter time, and I’m not even close to the end of the season. We are doing the right things. It was a really good race for me.”
Sophomore Gabe Hull earned a second-place finish in the men’s discus. Hull recorded a toss of 190-5 (58.05m) to finish just behind Northern Iowa’s Jordan Williams 190-6 (58.07m).
The men’s 400-meter relay team captured a third-place finish. The team of seniors Jordan Mullen, Austin, Ethan Holmes and Josh Larney turned in a time of 39.66.
Ryan Weir’s late kick earned him a third-place finish in the men’s 800 meters. Weir recorded a personal-best time of 1:50.01. That time ranks seventh all-time at Iowa, and currently ranks seventh in the Big Ten.
Mullen and Holmes finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the men’s 110-meter hurdles. Mullen clocked a time of 13.86, while Holmes recorded a time of 13.97.
Both of the Hawkeye sprint medley relay teams earned eighth-place finishes. The men’s team of sophomores Keith Brown and Kaleb VanCleave, and freshmen Neil Flattery and Will Teubel clocked a time of 3:24.76. The women’s quartet of freshman Lake Kwaza, junior Raven Moore, freshman MonTayla Holder and junior Adrianne Alexia crossed the line in a season-best time of 3:54.51. That time ranks second all-time at Iowa.
Sophomore Babatunde Amosu leapt to an eighth-place finish in the men’s triple jump. Amosu recorded a personal-best leap of 50-3 ¼ (15.32m). That mark ranks sixth all-time at Iowa, and currently ranks fifth in the Big Ten. Klyvens Delaunay also competed in the event. The freshman finished 11th with a jump of 49-11 ¼ (15.22m).
The Hawkeyes return to action May 3 for the UNI Invite in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
