Volleyball Releases 2013 Schedule

May 30, 2013

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Fifteen matches at Carver-Hawkeye Arena and 13 against teams that participated in the 2012 NCAA Tournament highlight the University of Iowa volleyball team’s 2013 schedule. Head coach Sharon Dingman and the UI Department of Athletics released the entire upcoming schedule today.

Iowa will begin the 2013 season Aug. 30-31 in Myrtle Beach at the Chanticleer Invitational before traveling to the Valparaiso Tournament on Sept. 6-7.

The Hawkeyes open their home slate with the annual Hawkeye Challenge on Sept. 13-14. Iowa will then host Iowa State on Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series matchup. The home slate also features 10 league matches. Under Dingman, the Hawkeyes have experienced nine of the school’s top 10 all-time attendance figures, and 18 of the top 21.

Iowa’s Big Ten slate features 20 dates in the nation’s best conference. Seven league teams were selected to the NCAA Tournament in 2012. Six of the final 16 teams in the tournament hailed form the Big Ten, and two advanced to the Final Four.

The Big Ten season begins with trips to Illinois (the 2011 NCAA runner-up) and Northwestern on Sept. 27-28, and ends with a home date against Ohio State on Nov. 30.

Iowa’s home match against the Buckeyes is the only regular season matchup between the two schools. The Hawkeyes also have just one match versus Penn State (Oct. 26 in University Park). All nine remaining Big Ten opponents are scheduled for a home-and-home series.

The first round of the NCAA Tournament starts Dec. 6 at campus sites to be determined. The NCAA Regionals begin Dec. 13 and the NCAA Championships are hosted by Key Arena in Seattle beginning Dec. 19.

Iowa’s televised matches will be announced later this summer.

The Hawkeyes return 15-of-16 letterwinners from last year’s squad and add a four-player recruiting class.
