IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa Director of Athletics Gary Barta announced today the hiring of Lyla Clerry as associate athletics director for compliance. Clerry joins the UI athletics staff after serving as an assistant athletics director at Arizona State the past seven years.
“Lyla brings a wealth of experience and expertise in athletic compliance,” said Barta in announcing Clerry’s hire. “She has a great combination of knowledge, integrity, and customer service. I’m excited to have her join our senior leadership team.
“Clerry’s hire is part one of a two-part process that will separate the leadership of the compliance and academic services areas. The change will better serve our coaches and student-athletes, and is one component of the athletics department’s overall Strategic Plan that will be released later this year.”
“My family and I are excited and honored to join the Hawkeye team,” said Clerry. “I look forward to working with the coaches, staff, and community to continue to uphold the high standards of the University of Iowa.”
Clerry has been a member of the Arizona State athletics department for the past seven years, serving as compliance director. She held similar positions at New Mexico from 2004-06 and Northern Arizona from 2003-04, while also serving as the assistant compliance officer at Oregon State from 1999-2003.
She began her career in compliance as an undergraduate at California State, San Bernardino and was later an intern in compliance and student services at Towson University. Clerry earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration, with concentration on business management, from California State, San Bernardino, in 1997. She later earned her master’s degree in educational leadership, with a specialization in higher education, from the University of Oregon in 2002.
